I have found no other solutions except the one I experienced. I have read other posts all over, and this has been happening since 2005, at least.

I used to use the task manager to just kill everything and then recover and save all the documents I could (tedious). when I closed that part file, I opened the assembly again, and the dialog box asked me if I wanted to rebuild the assembly, so I clicked "yes." To my astonishment, the drawing was no longer greyed out and I could save it like normal. Everything got greyed out on the drawing ONLY, and I was still able to close the part and assembly files (performed a rebuild and save.) While still having the (greyed out) drawing open, I opened another part file that was in the same assembly. I find that it only occurs when I have the assembly and the part that I am modifying, open at the same time.

I had this problem when I was updating a drawing.
